Hello!

I have ICQ. Few days ago I registered in network of Windows Messenger, but my program can't work - it say, that something with .NET Messenger Service (but it's all right) or with connecting with Internet (but it's all right, too)...

What's happened? What I must do???

Yes, and it also uses MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Google and many more.
And it's very versatile with hundreds of user made plugins, needs a fraction of the ressources that ICQ needs.
Also, no annoying ads.

I used Trillian for a short period before I switched to Miranda, but I didn't like the interface because it was too different from ICQ in some aspects and I'm a lazy bum who can't be bothered to learn new stuff when I'm already used to something.

How could MSN alone be better? :eek:
In Miranda I have contacts from ICQ, MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Jabber and Skype on one single contact list in one single, low ressource program that never has failed me.
It also auto-connects me to my favourite IRC channels.
Which is better, Miranda or Trillian?
I'd say Miranda.
The reason for me was, that its interface and controls handled almost like the ICQ client, which made it much easier to switch.
I tried Trillian for a few days, but there were a few often used things that handled very differently and couldn't be customized.
Also, I think Miranda has much more plugins and is more customizable.

But test both programs yourself, as I don't know how Trillian has developed the last year.

I love many of Trillian's features, but it seems very under-developed in some parts. Broken webcam support, transfer resuming and such. Can I upgrade from Trillian to Miranda, or would I lose all my contacts, history, etc?

That error probably has something to do with your firewall, try having MSN as an exception. Or contact your Internet connection provider, it might have something to do with that (though I doubt it).

Anyway, I'd rather use the regular Live Messenger right now. As tempting as Trillian seems, I don't think MSN would ever be the same without handwriting and bothering people with random game music and South Park quotes. :p

That is a very good question.
I only ever moved from ICQ-->Trillian and ICQ-->Miranda.

In those cases I the contacts are downloaded automatically from the ICQ server and I never cared about the histories.
I created my MSN, AOL and Yahoo accounts afterwards and never really used the respective original clients.

Xfire owns face. literally the only messenger I can use anymore considering the amount of video games I play almost constantly. nice, simple, easy to use, doesn't take up much ram, etc, etc, etc. awesome program.

from what i know windows messenger is dead... you have to use windows live messenger now.It's all just names, they all use the MSN Protocol.

Windows Messenger = version 5.x and prior
MSN Messenger = version 6.x - 7.x
Windows Live Messenger = version 8.x and later

it's safe to assume that

6 7 = 6 7

so therefore:

4 < 5

so 4 > 5
and >5 = windows messenger

then 4 = Windows Messenger!!

You don't need accounts for the other services to use Miranda with the MSN protocol.

Why would I use another client when the official one works fine?

Google Talk is the best one. Everything's archived, it doesn't need a client, it's a perfectly open protocol -- the only one I know of that explicitly states you can use any client you like aside from IRC which I hate -- and it doesn't have any features that make me want to kill. Oh, and I can dock it in my sidebar and the noises are much nicer than other IM clients'. Other than that I use MSN because everyone else does and Skype because it does everything.
Anyway, I'd rather use the regular Live Messenger right now. As tempting as Trillian seems, I don't think MSN would ever be the same without handwriting and bothering people with random game music and South Park quotes. :p
You're right, it's not the same. In fact, that's exactly why I use Trillian these days. I don't want people to be able to make my computer play music, I don't want to try and decypher their handwriting (their typing's bad enough) and since anyone who used the "nudge" feature on me got blocked without trial that was useful only as a bozo-filter.

I couldn't agree more, so I just switched them all off in the options. All I need now is a way to make a prompt appear when someone invites me to a multi-conversation, and MSN will be good again (remember MSN 5? No nudges, no handwriting, just "Do you want to accept this file?" and "No.")

I'd switch to Trillian if it included Sharing Folders. I use that a lot to shift research and notes around with classmates (yeah, I really do), so it's better to stick with MSN.

Most people on my buddy list don't send music without asking first, and it's a good way to see if someone will like a song before you send it to them. Handwriting, as far as I have seen, is used 99% of the time for drawing pictures, and that is usually quite fun.

I do hate nudges with a passion, and I'm just going to forget winks even exist. Fortunatly, you can disable all of the above except for possibly handwriting, but I may be wrong.

He realy should have used 'greater/less than or equal to' rather than 'grater/less than'.

Well, no, it didn't.

Firstly, because the notation was all in a special, completley made up form of maths that only Akuryou has ever used, so unless you're him or you sit there and crack his highly inconsistent code, it's gibberish. Secondly, because of this:
4 < 5

so 4 > 5
I think that it makes a lot more sense if you ignore the fact he pretends it was maths and just read the name of each symbol as you come to it.

Aside from the spelling, that's correct. But it's not what Akuryou wrote. Look again.

The problemis with things like "windows messenger = 5>".

That could mean "5, and anything greater than 5", "anything greater than five", or "anything less than five", since that's what 5>x would mean. The plain and simple fact is that that post was gibberish. Nothing you can say will change that. It was decypherable, but that doesn't mean it made sense as it was. Far better, I'd have said, to just use half as many characters explaining it infinitely more clearly using words.

Hmm, I didn't realize it was that bad. I guess I instinctively read it as 'Windows Messenger = less than or equal to 5" Because I know that any v ersoin of MSN with a five or less next to the name is Windows messenger.

Otherwise it's not very different from MSN. :p Plus MSN just allows for much more annoyance since you can invite anyone and they can't refuse it nor figure out who did it, which just incentivates the annoying nature of MSNers.

A big problem with MSN is that 20 people + handwriting + sounds + winks + nudges + ... = major slowdown = crashy crash!
