View Full Version : Sprite Editing Help Needed

Hi guys, I've been doing a bit of sprite editing, and it turned out quite well. But, I've noticed in the forum sprites that AK made, he put different colours than the palette on the worms. If I try that, in the game they come out bright white all over. I tried making the mortar shell red, but it doesn't work. It turns white, too... I was wondering, how did AK accomplish making the worms differ from their palette and not turn white?

where-as I'm not AK, I can provide preliminary help till he shows up.

did you, perhaps, just add the color to the image rather than changing a color within the pallette itsself? if so then that may be it as there is a limited pallette size.

that's all I got :p

That's what I want to know now...how do I edit the pallete that came with the sprite?

The only sprite I edited that used a colour not listed in the sprite palette (the one that comes with the editor) was Iguana's Flamethrower sprite.

From Memory: I added/replaced a green colour to the worm's palette (without loading the palette file). I then used that colour.

It would seem you can get away with adding a colour if you're careful. Of course, if W:A get's coverted to 32bit, this problem will disappear.

It's best to load the palette file that comes with the sprite editor (and to convert the background colour to a colour you won't be using).

Ah. This may be a problem. How do I load the palette? Are there any free painting programs that support this?

Any program that can import palette files (.pal). PSP and PS do.

It should be in the zip file that the editor came in. If not I'll see if I can find it.

Oh I found the palette file. Thanks!

GAAAAAAH! I can't find a free paint program that supports custom palettes! It's really annoying! I don't want to pay heaps for PSP of PS. And anyway, I already paid for PSP8 but I lost my disk!!!

Is there any way to convert the palette file into a bmp or png? Because then all I have to do is use a colour dropper tool to choose the palette colours!

Technically no. But I can take a screenshot.

Ok, the colour black appears twice. This is because the colour set to the Palette Index of 0 becomes the transparancy. I suggest you use one of the shades of purple or green in the palette instead (so you get 2 greens/purples instead of 2 blacks).

NOTE: Opening it in Notepad lets me see the RGB values...so maybe I can change or add colours to the palette at the bottom as there is just a bunch of:

0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0
's for ages...

Oh no. You cannot add anymore colours. That palette file contains the colours allocated for the sprites by the games 256 palette.

You have those 80 odd colours only.

ARGH! I've run into ANOTHER problem! What kind of bmp do I save it as? If I save it at 24-bit, it garbles in the game and sprite edtior. If I save at 256 colours, it turns white in the game as it loses colour information for the palette. And 16 colours? Haven't tried it, but I think it'll junk up too. Would IrfanView help me save it as a certain type of bmp, because paint.net won't...

EDIT: Irfanview is able to lower or raise colour quality, AND is able to load palettes...unfortnately I don't know the colour quality I need to issue...

You need to save it as a 256-colour BMP, while preserving the colour palette. AFAIK MS Paint can do that, if you don't use the "edit colours" feature. If not, I'm not aware of any free tools that are capable of doing that.

Okay, here goes...
Yes, hmm, MS paint is able to save it with it's own palette, but I can't get the quality I really want...also if I load the palette that came with thw sprite ediotr in irfanview it goes wonky...hold on a sec I'm-a just trying something...

GAH!:mad: :eek: :mad: :eek: :mad: Nothing works! I really need PSP 8 back! Oooh, where's that disk????

if it changes when you save it as 256 colours then that means your exceeding the number of colours availible to you.

Attach the sprite and I'll see if I have time to make it look high quality for you. I can't promise anything so keep working on it; I'm offering partly as help and partly just to give me a little project, so I might just not bother as with most of my projects. ;)
