View Full Version : Who uses Last.fm?

Last.fm, in case you weren't aware, is an application that tracks what music you play and then scrobbles it to the http://www.last.fm website, where you can view charts of the tracks and artists you've been listening to, as well as put those charts on websites and in forum signatures. You can also join groups of people that share your interests. It also recommends music based on your listening history, which is a great way to discover new stuff that you haven't heard before.

I've been using Last.fm since March, and find it to be an excellent service. If you aren't already using it, you should try it out. Be sure to join the Team17 Forum group and all that.

I have an account but I don't use it often because if I do a search for a band I like, it plays about 20 crap songs until it gets to a half decent one.

Turns out I only downloaded the radio thing...I only have a few albums on iTunes, I keep meaning to steal some off friends:p

I do. But I have no idea why any more. Most of the time I play all my music on shuffle, and only load some albums/playlists when I have a certain mood. But since it's all very various, the recommendations are pretty messed up.

Well let's see, I have something to track my computer stats, music playing, window open, etc, all to put it in my sig, another thing to track my mouse clicks / key presses and rank it against others, and now another thing to track my music interests... WHEN WILL IT ALL END?!?

Edit: Oh yeah: http://www.last.fm/user/supsuper/

I have been a member since 2005-05-20, and last.fm has been perfect to me. I always listen to full albums and choose carefully what I want to listen to based on my mood, so the statistics sent to last.fm are quite perfect for me. As you can see on my profile (http://www.last.fm/user/AlexFolland), I have a sort-of obsession with Boards Of Canada and a few other bands, though I have quite a wide taste.

Tried it, couldn't figure out how to make it read stuff from my iTunes, gave up.

Edit: All right, installed it again and figured it out.

Oops. That's what you get for leaving your PC playing music all day/night while you're gone for too long.

I downloaded the latest version of the last.fm software, and was disappointed to find that 1) it NEEDS to sit in your tray taking up more precious space 2) if you close it, tracks won't get scrobbled making the WinAMP plugin useless 3) it eats 45 MB of RAM, which is a way too much for a program that has to stay in the background doing nothing. So I ditched last.fm as of today, since I never really used it in the first place.

Don't get the latest updates.

That really annoyed me.

And it makes iTunes hang. A lot. A rope-around-neck-and-kick-away-rickety-chair lot.

I'll just be sure to avoid "updating". Really, they suck if they think anyone should need something beyond a Winamp plugin for it. :/

You have to much Mike Patton on that playlist.
You've become insane a long time ago, haven't you?

Give it a bit of time, Ween will pass all of those bands soon enough. I go through a lot of little musical "phases", I signed up for last.fm in the Mike Patton phase of the alt-rock era. Or something :-/

I finally found a reason to tag all my mp3s (I wrote a program to do it :p): hoping that it'll help them play better in my mp3 player. As a side effect, my Last.fm profile (http://www.last.fm/user/Bloopy/) is no longer useless... had the account for a while but couldn't use it until now due to lack of tags.

I use TagScanner (http://xdev.narod.ru/tagscan_e.htm) to keep my music tagged for media players and such. I'm too lazy to code something myself when someone beat me to it. :p

The latest version of the Last.fm program is fine from where I'm sitting. I'm quite happy to have that sort of thing in the system tray, and I've never seen it using more than 7MB of memory. Perhaps they improved its performance.

Also, I love how someone has submitted images of the Japanese rock band Bow Wow (http://www.last.fm/music/Bow+Wow/+images) to try and oust Lil' Bow Wow. Up with Japan, down with the try-hard kid!

The T17 forum group (http://www.last.fm/group/Team17+Forum) has some charts on it now. :D It had said charts were only for groups of 15 or more, but I guess they changed it to 10.

Also the other recent problems with user charts seem to have been sorted out now, for me at least.

Hey, I have joined the T17 group too.

Does anyone know why the last.fm tool always tries to read from my floppy drive when a new track is started in Winamp?
I unchecked the A: drive in the scrobbling options.

I was one of them. :p My bar may be set quite low, but I do have a bar, don't worry about that.

Spice Girls? Ewww...

Hooray! Zeppelin and Beatles are in the Top 5!

Oh... and who played Madonna?

And The Beatles and/or Zeppelin? Hate to think I'm the only one who did...

KamikazeBananze

I listen to a LOT of them...

The numbers in the chart reflect how many songs or how many people?

On reflection, I'm guessing the latter.

Same here. These are my only matches:

Your musical compatibility rating with Bloopy is: Very Low. You share a few artists in common, including bjorn lynne.
Your musical compatibility rating with MadEwokHerd is: Very Low. You share a few artists in common, including bjorn lynne, and Amon Tobin.

Surprisingly, I'm only compatible with Paul:

Your musical compatibility rating with PaulPower is: Medium. You share a few artists in common, including Joker, analoq, bjorn lynne, John Broomhall, and Intelligent Systems.

I know! And I'm surprised we are Very Low because we still have a bunch of artists in common!

You share a few artists in common, including Beck, Mylo, ATB, Venetian Snares, and Scissor Sisters.

It's kind of weird that Secret Mommy isn't in that list

Yes, one. That's how many people I am. The chart has counted two.I meant that as opposed to the one. So in other words, I expected it to be 1 person playing it twice than 2 people playing it once.

Take it from me. After all, the number of times I've played certain artists...

Intruiging.

I've got a High compatability with Bloopy. Everyone else is Low or Very Low.

And Bloopy's one of maybe five people I friended who has such a high compatability.

Curiously, my brother and I have SUPER! compatability...
