View Full Version : IMG tags suck.

Ugh.

I didn't see the harm at first but now every other thread I read is littered with images. It's quite jarring.

I just thought I'd stick up a poll to see how everyone else feels about it (in the hope that everyone agrees with me and img tags are removed again).

I don't see any pictures in the posts!
Only the link adresses.

I need [img] tags to live.

Actually, I think that there's just some inital abuse of the tags. Once the novelty wears off, everything will be just peachy again.

I say they should stay (once they work properly - i too just see links).

Good point.

It's just horrible when you oversleep, haven't hd your morning coffee, and your fanart thread is suddenly raped by img tags. Also, it's getting a bit out of hand in the anime thread.

I just hope you're right, FutureWorm.

They work fine for me. Maybe you guys have "Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)" disabled in your User CP?

And they don't bug me a lot, I just don't like it when they're so wide they cause horizontal-scrolling. Thank gawd for Opera's "fit to width" button.

Hey, I quite liked my pictures in the anime thread. Though slightly large, I feel the look of an anime is important, so they weren't [I]too inappropriate.

Instead of getting rid of the IMG tag in toto, I'd say letting the moderators know they can and should remove pictures whenever they feel someone's overdoing it would be enough. If that includes my posts, so be it.

Also I'm pretty sure the hype will wear off after a while, people are just excited at the endless possibilities for now. I'm sure the optimism won't last, mwahahar.

I'd prefer table breaking to the horizontal scrolling, but maybe that's just me.

I don't mind them - if someone posts an inappropriate image, we just delete it and give them an infraction/warning.

People will get over the novelty and stop adding useless images sooner or later. At least it's not putting as much a strain on the forum server as people attaching useless pics. If you see someone abusing the tag, just report it.

Edit:

Dang, clicked the wrong poll button. That's what happens when the poll question is the opposite of the thread title

They weren't at all inappropriate. I would have liked to have seen thumbnails or just links, though, to be honest. :)

Frankly the forum's been one foot in the grave ever since the release of W3D. It may indeed wear off, but [img] tags at present seems like another foot in the grave. :p

Solution:

I say IMG tags go away!
They completely uglify the nice look of the retro purple fixed look.

Or maybe I should disable that option again.

I always have "Load images for the originating web site only" checked anyway so it doesn't matter to me. There are a few domains (amazon.com, for one), where I'll see images no matter what.

Off-site images make my browser slow.

I don't care eather way really. I can see how it helps me with some pics I want to put into my thread in fanart. I hate resizeing stuff alot, and to resize somthing only to find out its ONE pixel too big, gets on my nerves. But when people have pictures that are WAY to big, it's just downright annoying.

But it could be nice to post some kind of weird animation to go along with your reaction to post without wasting the space or whatever on this forum. But I can live with out it.

Of course there will be allot of pictures when img tags are enabled, but I'm supriesed there arn't more.

Star Worms
20 Aug 2006, 14:21
The attach tag works differently - If you use the attach tag to attach an attachment which isn't in your post then it makes a link. If you have attached it to your post then the attachment shows, rather than the link. The attachment doesn't show in a quote because the attachment isn't in that post, it is in the post that was quoted. Could I be more confusing?

bonz

Well, that's the same with images too.
You post an image, I quote your post.

^this.

I don't mind really, it's just when someone puts like 5 big pics in a post and then someone quotes them :P

I guess I'm lucky to have my own webspace where I can upload images and just link them if they're too big.

Ah well, I wasn't here when everyone pleaded for them so I guess I'd neglected to take that into account.

Lex

The novelty will wear off and it will take some load off the server too.The images are off-site. That's the whole point. The load won't be taken off the Team17 forum server. Your browser loads the files from the various image servers, since that's where they're located. The Team17 server sees no extra traffic.

Also, when you multiple instances of the same image on one page, there's no extra traffic either. What's wrong with quoting an imaged post if the image exists on the page previously? There's no extra load time. Do you really mind that much that you have to scroll farther? If so, I suggest you use the Scrollbar Anywhere Firefox extension. It's my favourite extension, which lets me just right-click and drag anywhere on the page and it acts as if the scrollbar is beneath my cursor. I don't have to grab the teenie scrollbar on the right all the time. Seriously, get it and scrolling won't be such a pain.

Vader
20 Aug 2006, 18:39
I use my mouse-wheel, middle-button and the cruise buttons on my mouse (Logitech MX700). It's the same thing without the extension.

I just find it a bit jarring, really. It's not about load times or even scrolling. It just makes things that bit harder to read. Furthermore, it's entirely unnecessary to leave images in quotes; it serves no real purpose from what I have seen.

Xinos
20 Aug 2006, 18:51
I alwase take images out of quotes, people who are to lazy to do that irritate me. Speaking of annoyances, here's a feature this forum luckily does not have. Automaticly adding someone elses quote aswell as their text when you quote them.

Although sometimes quotes don't really make sense without their own quotes, but it prevents the dreaded quoting pyramids.

I use the mouse wheel also, but the Scrollbar-Anywhere extension is far different, and even allows you to move the scrollbars around as if you are holding the horizontal and vertical scrollbars simultaneously, which is great for oversized images.

Vader
23 Aug 2006, 18:00
I don't know about you but if I click my mouse wheel in I get an image of a tracking ball on the screen where I clicked and the cursor turns into 4 arrows. I can then mouse my mouse to scroll wherever I like.

Signature images are distracting aye?

Would having this in my signature really make this forum hell?
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/darkxinos/sig.png

I think most avatars are distracting though..

Vader
24 Aug 2006, 21:36
To be honest, I think so. If everyone had something different it would be chaotic.

Avatars aren't so bad as they're all in a column and actually make life quite easy. As most languages read left to right, it is natural to observe the avatar before reading the post, making it easier to know who's posted it.

Signature images break the posts up too much, in my opinion. They tend to make reading a thread a jarring and often offensive experience.

I would actually prefer that to a single URL link. Trouble is, if we allowed images in sigs they wouldn't all be as subtle as yours....

Well.

Nothing can stop you from pasting your "signature" manually, with images and all, at the bottom of your post every time you post.

Hmm. Maybe I should start doing just that. :P

Perhaps Sel could design a template for signature images. That way at least they'd be slightly uniform. That said, perhaps size and dimension restrictions would be enough. That said, perhaps they'd still distort the experience a little too much.

SupSuper
24 Aug 2006, 22:42

Lex

I'd say the avatar area is a good spot for a signature image. Everyone uses that already and is content with it.

However, perhaps sig images could be limited to userbar size (350×19).
