If you would like to play only with your friends, you can host the game using Direct IP. You will need to forward port 17011 on your router/firewall, if appropriate. Or, you can get one of your friends to host the game.

If you are able to connect to WormNET now (it is unclear from your post if this is so), just make a passworded game on WormNET and agree with your friends on the password beforehand.

After you connect to WormNET, enter a channel, by double clicking its name from the list above. Most people play in #AnythingGoes. In the channel, there should be a "Host" game button in the top right corner. Click that, and enter a name for you game, and a password if necessary. Press OK, and your game will be created - other players will be able to join your game. If you've entered a password, they will be required to enter the same password as the one you specified.

(Sorry if this isn't what you were looking for, it was unclear with what were you having problems).
