So I was messing around with some stuff today when I discovered something interesting. Apparently, on the wwp CD there is a water setting called "blue2" that is different than the other 5 default waters that were included with the game. The waves look like crashing waves instead of smooth waves. The animation looks very unique. Here's a link to a screenshot I took of them.

I need those crashing waves in W:A!

In the spirit of the occasion, I made a quick little program that will allow you to see it for yourselves. By default this program will only work if your wwp CD is the D: drive. (unless you hex edit)

Wow, you still use HyperSnap DX to take DirectX screenshots? Use Fraps (http://fraps.com/), silly.

Ha, those waves look awesome.

Getting those waves for WA is simple with CyberShadow's FileOverride module for WormKit (http://maplecenter.net/wormkit/).

Ya I have that program. You can choose the crashing waves with it? I thought you could only adjust the colors for smooth waves.

Yes, I'm living in the past... what's fraps?

You're thinking of the water editor, another fine tool by CyberShadow, that let's you choose any color and transparency effects for the water (the ones available in the palette).

Wormkit is a modular tool, with one module enabling you to override files of your CD if you have them in your game directory.
Makes swapping water files much easier. No need for burning new CDs or changing CD images.

A nifty screenshot/video capture/fps tool.

Wouldn't the PrintScreen button be better?

Ive tried running them in WA, but got the error where you dont get any water at all (like running WA with a WWP CD) has anyone else got this working?

*Sigh*
Why do you think the screenshot feature (pause/break key) has been added in the W:A beta updates if the PrintScreen button would have done the job?

Try it for yourself, then come back and tell us about the result.

Bonz, does it work in WA? I can't be bothered to do all that just to discover it doesn't work!

EDIT: Tried it, it doesn't work. I'll have to download that program... someday...

I tried using the water.dir from the blue2 folder from the WWP CD and overrode it with WormKit, but it doesn't work.
Animated water is completly goned, only a blue block at the bottom, where everything dissappears in.

Hmm. Perhaps someone could format the sprite files properly for WA. They may be too wide or something like that. Yay for Fudge Boy's handy-dandy Sprite Directory Editor!

A problem with the water.dir file is it is not simply a sprite. It contains a .spr file, a .img file, a .txt file, and a .bnk file.

The .txt file is an index for the other files.

layer.spr - I believe this is the animation for the waves.
water.bnk - I have no idea what this is for, but it looks complicating. (probably compressed somehow)
fill.img - Might be the fill color.

Using the sprite editor wasn't very helpful. I don't think it would be easy to get blue2 working on w:a, unless it is directly linked like I did in wwp.

Edit: Just checked. Blue2 is a 128x32, 8 frame, upto 256 color animation. Smooth Blue is the exact same format. (at least I think it is 8 frames, may be more)

No, the smooth blue has 12 frames. At least the WA one does.

Wow, I was just looking at the Water.dir WWP uses, and the sprites must be a totally different sprite format than WA's, as Fudge Boy's Directory Editor can't open the layer.spr in it, though it can open the one in WA's Water.dir.

And yes, I already knew .dir was a directory format which contained files (http://wiki.thecybershadow.net/Graphics_directory).

Ahh that explains a bit. I looked at a w:a water.dir file and it is quite different indeed. The actual wave animation is exactly the same in both files except differences in palettes. The .bnk file in the wwp water must be a collection of all the .spr images used for underwater things.

So, the Blue2 layer.spr could be adapted for WA. :) Can you do it, EthoCrytic, O Powerful One?

Well ole lex, I may be able to do it. I think I know the way to do it now. But for now, I'm going to try find some chaps on wormnet and play a few games. :)

http://wiki.thecybershadow.net/Land_Data_file

Ajusting layers 1 and 2 so that they do not match can allow you to move through land that you can see or crash into land that you cannot see. By default the two always match. In that particular game I changed it so that they did not align in certain places.
