http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/30/e3-canceled-for-next-year-and-beyond/

Doug Lowenstein, the president of the Entertainment Software Association is expected to announce within the next 48 hours that E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the definitive video games show, has been cancelled. Industry sources have told Next-Gen that the reasoning behind this move is primarily one of cost versus return. Publishers aren't getting the media attention that they expect from the large amounts of cash that they're putting down to exhibit at the show.

Yes, apparently there might be no more E3s in the years to come.

Well...thats messed up.
Even if there are no more E3s to come...im sure there would be something like it to take its place.

That's gotta be a hoax.

It's like cancelling the Cannes Film Festival, for crying out loud!

Why are you appalled? It's not genocide or anything. Besides, you and I can't get in unless we work in the industry.

Even those that do can't, usually. I still enjoy reading the E3 Edge every year, though.

I still think it's a hoax.

Have you considered the April Fool's Day pranks pulled every year across the industry? In fact you don't even need to look that far - Team17 are prone to it themselves! There's still humour in games/the game industry.

(edit: I'm being very rubbish at posting today.)

I still say it's a hoax.

April Fools is for people who bother to get up before noon. That's how they came up with the name. Humour in the industry isn't dead but Paul has a good point. Without the deadline of E3 developers and publishers won't be as rushed to produce something for the competition, but that won't stop the machine (developers need publishers, publishers need money, publishers squeeze developers, etc. Though that likely is not the case with every publisher). If E3 stops, it'll be a shame, a bad thing in gaming history but I expect something else will come of it.

OT: Two alternative theories to games getting worse: 1. People just think they are because they liked them more when they were young, 2. As more games get released ideas are harder to come up with.

3. The money in videogames is increasing, and so therefore is the investments people make in producing them, and that has two knock-on effects: firstly, the risks if your game fails (as most do) are bigger than ever and therefore publishers want to make as sure-fire sellers as they can rather than gamling on several games which may or may not become all-time classics, and secondly, it's harder and harder for a small independant to do anything about it.

There are new ideas about -- Nintendo seem to have no shortage of them. And there are essentially infinite to choose from.

Everything that can be invented has been invented.
It was wrong then and it's wrong now.

No it's not. It would be like closing a festival that only showed movie trailers.
E3 is clearly not needed anymore. It costs to much, is too crowded, not worth the attention.
I agree with them that it would be better to host smaller showings instead of everybody at the same time. Would spread out the news =)

We gamers have never been to E3 so it makes absolutely no difference in our case if E3 stays or not, it'll just save time and money for the game developers to stop trying to be louder and more awsome than the next booth, aswell as make it easier for reporters.

Maybe that's a good thing. If we get away from the idea of games as something to be taken seriously, perhaps they'll become more fun again.

Hmm, I think the real reason games are generally less fun now a days and less original is not due to the vast increase of interest and coverege on the going-ons. It's the publishers see the potential for making money on pupular franchises etc. that prohibits creativity among the developers. Hollywood making a game out of every movie. Film was the same way, but now more independant film companies get their chance to show their films. Also games take so much time, resources and people now a days that it might be to dangerous to risk doing something crazy and original.

If only publishers could accept lesser profits and allowing more freedom among developers..

AndrewTaylor

Maybe this would be a good opportunity to start something a bit more like Cannes -- where space is given out based not on cash but on merit, and more independant game makers get a chance to shine. And the public are allowed in -- primarily because you'd need them for numbers at first.

Vader

I had found Edge a little hard to bear during 2005 as it seemed to take a mighty plunge in quality (mainly in the proofreading) but I now find it an enjoyable read.

I find it a lot less childish than Gamemaster etc and whilst it may be pretentious it's often right.

The stages of greif Kubler-Ross identified are:

Denial (this isn't happening to me!)
Anger (why is this happening to me?)
Bargaining (I promise I'll be a better person if...)
Depression (I don't care anymore)
Acceptance (I'm ready for whatever comes)

Guess which one you are :p

Well look at it this way, if E3 was costing you millions of dollars that you ultimately weren't earning back as a result of E3 itself, would you want to go on with it? I seem to recall a similar article prior to this year's E3 saying that they (I forget who "they" are, exactly) were basically on the edge about hosting it anymore at all. Now it just seems their opinion's solidified.

While I must say it is rather a disappointment, this'll inevitably lead to smaller-scale things like maybe company-specific GDC events. We'll get our previews one way or another, even if they aren't as clustered together in such a flashy fashion.

Did my post get deleted or did my connection/PC just mess me about?

Anywho I'll try again.

E3 Closing doesn't bother me as was said before we've never been. But I'll be (ok no swearing) "highly mythed" if ECTS closes, I was good when I found the time to go.

I don't really care. I never liked E3, it feels overly-extravagant and showy and it just annoys me, generally.

Though I like how game footage gets out (I'm rather excited for excite-truck, Super Mario Galaxy and Elebits a fair bit more than I was before.)

* Not really, but when I was young I was told my older cousin did some army cadet thing where he had to wear the same pants for a week and eat worms. And it was endorsed by a royal? Whatever. Those crazy fools.

I still find it hard to believe that something so profitable (mmm... profiteroles) would be closed down on the basis that they want it to be more intimate.
