The company is smarter than that. They know it'll be an unpopular move, that's why they're announcing it.

1. Píss off a load of people by announcing drastic change to tradition
2. Get into the media spotlight
3. Sell lots of units
4. Laugh all the way to the bank and pretend nothing happened

Four simple steps to corporate greed!

It does specifically state in the article that classic paper-money Monopoly will remain and this is just a new alternative.

Come on, we've had Garfield Monopoly, Peanuts Monopoly, Simpsons Monopoly, Canada-opoly, INSERT POPULAR LICENSING DEAL HEREopoly... this isn't so different.

Well, at least it isn't Irish Monopoly.

Irish Monopoly involved taking all the money and all the costs and payments, AND MULTIPLYING BY A THOUSAND.

As a result, the lowest amount you can have is €1000. And let's not even mention how much the properties cost.

Sweeet. This will undoubtfully raise the value of classic style monopoly, and the new style seems more fun.

Conservatism sucks! You can't live in your nostalgic childhood memory forever! Get with the times foo'!

Aside from anything else, it'll be handy for a quick game where you don't want to waste time messing about changing 500s to pay a $2 rent.

But yes, this happens all the time. There's always Classic Monopoly and Novelty Monopoly. They did a version not long ago with all different place names, if you recall, to make it reflect modern London better.

There's a very easy way to reflect modern london.

Get a very big mirror.

i get the feeling that putting in cards and transfering a £2 fine from one player to the bank, and then from bank to other player will take longer than handing them 2 1's....

Chris Weatherhead, brand manager at Parker games, which makes MonopolyI thought Waddingtons made Monopoly?

I get a feeling that thing will quickly break taking in account how often it'll be passed around players to not only do transfers but also to just check how much money you still have.

Or it could make it easier to cheat, who knows.

Well at least it isn't as bad as Zimbabwe Monopoly would be.

Waddingtons made the UK version.

I thought the UK one was the original though?

I will not try to argue the complex history of this game, but I wll point towards the source of great knowledge:

Come on, it was your RIGHT as a banker to cheat. Now that we have this plastic thing, everyone is going to be able to cheat and it'll ruin eveyone's fun.

Also, how will free parking work, now? Is it actually a rule that all money from taxes and the like go to Free Parking?

"The banker is ****ed today and decides to take half of all your money for no good reason." Also, no more fun throwing your bills around when you win.

I don't remember, it was optional in the video game. Maybe the device has a Memory button?

I know, it hurts me too :p.

london was the first commercially made one, according to that wiki all boards in atlantic city were made by hand so there cant have been many.

I think you can add or subtract any crazy amount of money you please on those cards, so free parking would work the same way it always did. If you're not too hot at remembering how much cash is in there, give it a spare card.

Frankly, I think it's a pretty stupid rule anyway. Makes the game go on forever and adds far too much random chance for my tastes. You need some kind of a money sink to stop the bank running out.

I'm quite fond of the 'free parking' thing.

But that's probably got a lot to do with the fact that I enjoy using the phrase 'House rules'.

It's not quite as stupid as the '£200 for passing go and £500 for landing on go' rule.

KB, irish monopoly sounds a lot like Poleconomy in terms of stupidly large (though a lot more realistic) numbers.

It's only realistic in terms of property costs. The amount you have is not very realistic.

100 is €1,000,000, for cryin' out loud.

I don't see why those extra three zeroes would bother you so much.

3 zeroes I say?

Actualy 100 x 1000 is only 100,000.

Outmathed and outsmarted!

now someone gets to point out my glaringly obvious spelling and grammar errors.

Why don't they bring out a new version with different money? I'd buy Mayfair for £400 anyday.

It should clearly be "outmathsed".

I dunno. You wouldn't say "outmathematicsed", you'd say "outmathematiced"
