K. So, my dad got himseld a laptop from work for uh... work.
So this computer has a dvd burner, and my mom wanted to connect it with the laptop we currently have here (the one I'm typing from).
So there I was installing a Belkin USB Direct connect thing on both laptops.
I configured it on this one, everything fine.
Now, I went on to install it in the other one(which has Windows XP Professional btw), and then BOOM blue screen. With an error messsage that said something around the lines of "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" thing.
I kinda remembered someone getting that error frequently here, so if you know anything about it, I would appreciate the help.

Why not just network using either a crossover cable (connected straight into the two laptops, not via a router), or go through a router?

Networking = faster, always assuming the laptops have ethernet sockets...

Yeah, I think my dad tried a usb networking thingy once and it didn't work.

Buy a cheap router or switch if you don't have one and get it connected through that I thinks.

You don't even need that - just one cable - a crossover cable, and that'll do fine.

Long time since anyone'as had to mess around with interrupt requests. All I can suggest is you go to your device manager, open the properties for some hardware like soundcard and modem, and see if you can change the IRQ numbers they use. The reason being is that sometimes PCs assign certain numbers to certan kinds of hardware so conflicts can arise. Check Windows XP help for the term IRQ. You might want to check out the PC's BIOS for any related options, too. Mind, I'm not sure if IRQs are relevant to USB devices but they may be at least with the USB controller.

This laptop doesn't. But my uncle has a couple of ethernet cards lying around his place. My first suggestion was to borrow one, but my mom wanted to try the usb thingie first, so...

Matty, thanks for the suggestions, I'm gonna give em a try when my father is back from work. If all fails I hope uninstalling the device will do the work :x

Search for the exact error message at www.microsoft.com.
(Archiving their errors and bugs is actually a field where they are very good in.)

You have no freaking idea. IRQL errors are the "we don't know what the hell went wrong so here's a fancy-sounding placeholder error message" of XP. They can be triggered by conflicting IRQ addresses, faulty RAM, conflicting software or hardware, an overtaxed power supply, or in my case completely at random by nothing at all, apparently.

Good luck.

IRQL means "I ruminate quinces laggardly" of course.

Well, the error hasn't ocurred again. It seems it was indeed caused by the Belkin thingamajig, so as long as I don't connect that thing back, everything should be fine, yes.

I think I was the one. I once got four in the space of three hours.

Once it was because I removed my headphones from the jack at the front of my PC. I swear, it's true!

And most of them occured after I installed Zone Alarm. I booted, it IRQLed, then rebooted. Lather, rinse, repeat.

They can be triggered by a buttload of stuff or in my case completely at random by nothing at all, apparently.Be sure to check:
Number of hard drives
File sizes of any files stored in a folder whose name begins with P
Content of refrigerator
Dental hygiene
Success of yearly potato harvest
Alignment of planets
Reticulation of venetian splines
Cats
Color of undergarments
Color of someone else's undergarments
The definition of the word "acrimonious"
Whether the computer is on
Computer's proximity to military helicopters
The color green
If all those are good, I dunno what to tell ya.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I checked all those in addition to my brand of deodorant, the elasticity of my socks, and the density of the air particles in my neighbourhood.

Did you check the AMOUNT of air particles? Few people know that this is one of the leading causes of IRQL BSODs.

That and Leading Causes of IRQL BSODs. That's another big one no-one knows about.
