View Full Version : Online speed problem

First of all, my main system specs:

Windows XP SP1; Internet Firewall: OFF
Athlon T-Bred 2400+ (2.0 GHz) @ MB Gigabyte 7VAX (VIA KT400)
GeForce 5900XT 128 Mb; ForceWare version : 81.94
RAM: 768 Mb @ 400 Mhz
Net connection: ADSL 512/128 Kbps
Worms 4 version: 1.0.0.1.

Now can anyone help me, I'm having serious speed problems in online play. In Singleplayer game is everything OK, but in Network play I have a serious lag and frame rate problems and sometimes frame rate goes to 1 frame per second, and even less (1 frame every 4-5 seconds). And 1 FPS can kill all the fun of the game and can make use of jet pack (and similar tools) impossible mission.

I can host, I can join, all ports are open (Firewall is OFF), but how to speed up this "game of the century" in network play?

Thanks.

what do you mean, 512/128 Kbps? One or the other?

512 Kbps = Download speed
128 Kbps = Upload speed

Interesting, this sounds EXACTLY like my problem which I've posted about before (see this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25403) or this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=28721) - sound familiar?) and have yet to ever reach a solution. Tech support has been unable to help either.

At first I thought maybe it was a dual-CPU problem since both my old machine and my new machine are dual-CPU, but maybe it's an AMD thing... but I can't come up with any reason *why* that would be. My old and new machine are completely different otherwise (different motherboard, chipset, graphics card, network card, EVERYTHING) so I'm at a loss to explain why the barfs.

I think our only hope is to get someone at Team17 to make a debug build that might help them figure out what is going wrong, but I kind of got ignored on that when I brought it up.

Ohh! I remember! I think it is the dual-CPU!

Someone's had this before

Or maybe that was a different problem...

Well, Slawex doesn't have a dual CPU, and his problem sounds identical to mine. Also, if I run Worms and force it only to use one processor, it acts no differently. Finally, Team17 says they tested it on a dual CPU machine and it ran fine.

So it's something else.

I don't think this is the AMD thing; ALL games I have works perfect with my processor... well, except this one :) I will go on with my investigation, and maybe I find solution for my problem in a year or two

I don't think it's an AMD thing either, but so far that is the only commonality I can find between our systems, besides that they run XP (I'm on SP2). I too only have ever had this problem with Worms 4.

I've got 2 totaly different machines than you, that have the same problem. Motherboard and chipset are different (Tyan 2895 + nForce Pro chipset, and a Tyan 2462 + AMD 760MP chipset), totally different graphcis card (nVidia 7800GT 84.21, and an ATI Radeon), different amounts of RAM (2GB and 1GB), and I'm on a cablemodem running through a Linux firewall but this same thing even happens if I play over the LAN. You notice the stickiness in the interface and mouse as soon as you enter the Network menu of the game.

Yeah, the mouse pointer is moving in the network menu like a dead rabbit :) But I must admit 1 little thing too: Sometimes (approximately 1 day of the whole week) everything works perfect and there is no trace of lag or weird slow-downs.. So if this thing is AMD thing, then I shall have same problems every day; and not now and then... I think the main problem here is one segment of the net connection, but I can't be sure or prove anything...

It could be from turning off your firewall.Instead of turning it off, configure your ports and it should be fine. SP2 seems like a good idea too.

That's what I thought on the beginning of my problem and I tried that, but with the same (sad) ending.

SP2 then? Worth a try.Maybe try a different firewall out.

I'm running SP and have the same problem, with an external firewall (which isn't the problem).
