Well, my website's down at the moment, but I've uploaded a new Sunday comic which I rather like and which has absolutely nothing to do with any other Apathy comic or character, so I thought I'd post it here.

You can access it at http://66.90.118.124/~andrew/comic/ -- the comic is fine, but the layout is all messed up without the domain name in place.

Edit: It's now back up at http://comic.apathysketchpad.com -- probably it will go down again soon, but that's where it is in a proper page layout.

Woo, some human drawing that isn't Beings-of-Light based.

Although it's still a weird concept, and it gets an Artist's Commentary of massive proportions (I'll never understand those people who put "..." in the Artist's Comments box...)

:( :( :( :(Well, what? The hair's short and your drawing is the head and shoulders only so there are no obviously female anatomical traits.

From there we go:

* Fairly thick eyebrows
* No real pronounced eyelashes
* Thick-set neck with no real forward jut
* Fairly firm jawline

and get out the conclusion that it's a man (I'll concede that the lips and eyes are points in favour of femininity, but at best you're now in androgenous territory)

I'm not saying it's a bad drawing, because it's not. But it's not especially feminine either.

I thought it would be a great idea to draw this on realy big paper. I thought it would be neat to draw the background separate to the foreground on another sheet. Then I thought, how a bout a logo? I'll draw that on another sheet too. While I'm at it I might as well draw some more stuff to fill the empty space at the sides. Two more pages then.

then came the problem of scanning these five massive A2 pages with my tiny A4 sized scanner. Luckily I managed to locate a paper-trimming guilotine, unfortunately it was also A4 sized.

It took a lot of folding and a bit of scisor work, but I did it. I scanned the mother and stuck it back together.

And here it is. almost completely indestinguishable from just about every other picture in my deviantart gallery.:p

Ultra Fractal is a good programme. You can create quite complex fractal generation algorithms, or simply edit existing ones.

Most of the standard formulas let you mess around with various settings (such as iterations per pixel, exponentiation, bailout values).

I've been working on my shading and lighting.(Repost of dA comment) Very nice, although AK has a point about the shading: the flat tail looks weird next to the shaded body, even if it is meant to be in the dark. A second layer of shading should solve it (after all, you have two layers of highlights).

Surely Cell-shading was invented to emulate 2D comic-book art in 3 dimentions. It's a style of shading that's meant to look like a cartoon. You are, in effect, saying that I'm tring to emulate something that emulates cartoon shading. I can see your point, but I'm not.

I'm simply trying to do cartoon shading, obviously without any great sucess. :p

MonkeyforaHead
29 Apr 2006, 16:52
I've tried shading about twice. I utterly suck at it because I fail to understand how the shadows should project based on the angle of the light source. I've had a couple ideas for comics involving those lightning storms that turn the character solid black everywhere that isn't facing the flash, but after my attempts to shade those, I completely gave up. :p

Edit: Your stuff is still a darn sight better than any of mine, any slight inaccuracies aside.

It looks alright to me, but there are a few bits where it seems like you forgot where the light is. The tail on the left, and the arm holding the big gun up, mostly. It's not an easy thing to do, though, so give youself more credit.

I don't know why, but your human-drawing style looks kinda weird to me. I can't point out exactly why, maybe I'm too used to your cartoonish style :pMaybe it's because I don't really have a fixed style yet. Even on as simple an issue as lineart I've pretty much travelled from one end of the spectrum to the other.

What is it, though?

I can see what a lot of the actual calculation is that produced the image, but where the curves and source images came from is probably not guessable from the images alone. It's very impressive. Where do you start building up something like that? It almost looks too... holistic to have been done one "brushstroke" at a time.

I'm not sure how to explain. Most of my latest fractals were generated in Apophysis, and I'm not sure how it calculates and makes these things (it's very secretive...), but a look into Ultra Fractal (which I also use for a lot of my fractals) should give you an idea, since it lets you tweak the formulae and see the results.

The Tracks fractal consists of these two fractals.

Remember when I said I'd been asked to do a comic strip for a monthly student magazine?

I was ever so pleased. I spent a good deal of time lovingly hand crafting 11 comics for them over last year's summer holiday. I put them all on disc and sent them away.

well it's a whole year on and not one issue has been put out. :p The aparantly talked a lot about writing articles and features but never actualy got down to doing any real work for the project. This s especialy suprising considering that they managed to make money on the magazine the year before.

Bloody students.

As a result I've had these cartoon strips knocking about on my computer, not doing much.

And as they're never going to see the printed page I thought I might as well share them with you people.

Some of them are funny, some of them don't realy make much sence and I feel I must apologize for the 'Tunes' joke.

And I know that the camera could be better in places, but I made this OVER the deadline. We were supposed to be done by 3:00, but I could go over because I was commuting.
And now that I think about it, on Monday and Tuesday we were just trying out 3ds Max and hand-drawn animation to see which one we would focus on. And on friday there was the show...
Good god, did I really make that in less than 2 days? I swear that I had more time than that!

There's a competition going on to put animation over Stephen Colbert's light-saber acting.
I am so totally making something for it.
Here's a pic of part of what I got so far. (This'll take me a while.)

I suppose I did rush the hair rather...

Lex
6 Sep 2006, 18:04
Don't give him a face, then. Tbh, I like it without him having a face. It's great like it is. Without the face, it's up to the viewer's imagination to think up what his expression is. That's one of my favourite kinds of art, actually; partial. Autechre, a great electronic band I listen to, often makes partial melodies and beats so that the listener fills in the missing parts in their mind, and it sounds great. It's a really brilliant technique.

j/k, I'm no artist so I can't tell how accurate it is, it seems nice to me, and you sure can draw human feet and hands better than me. (I always end up doing mittens)

Xinos
8 Sep 2006, 22:45
I find feet much easier to draw than hands, hands are HARD! A rule you should try to follow is keeping the thickness of the fingers the same from base to tip, even if you don't put all 5 of them on the hand. But besides the feet and hands, the only thing that stands out as strange are the legs.. they are much too long.. or his body is too small, you pick :p

I like your pictures because so much is going on in them, but th perspective in that is really off. You need to set a perspective point and stick with it =P

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2007/perspxr5.jpg

The one with the green lines is the one I decided to be the correct one, and the red lines show how the roof tops should be angled accordignly. The reason the red lines are so extreamly angled is of course because the perspective point of the "correct one" is very close. It needs to be waaaaay off in the distance for it too look natural.

I am very bad at this myself, It's much easier to find problems than fix them while your drawing ;P

Macobsession
10 Sep 2006, 17:55
Yeh i know. I'll try to go back and fix the angles a bit.

I have a tendancy to get lazy with backgrounds.

BTW the green lined one is also the first one i drew.

Generally when i draw buildings, the first one is best and then each one after that gets progressive worse.

Anyway, I'll see what i can do.

EDIT:

Heres it fixed and spiffed up. I added fog and such.
