View Full Version : W:A v3.6.22.1 Released!

Fixes
If the volume was adjusted in-game, the change didn't have an instant effect upon returning to the front end.
Volume adjustment is now applied to streams and in-game ambient music. There is now nothing left that doesn't respond to volume control.
The Extract Log feature brings up a console window to show its progress. However, it would often be opened behind other windows. It will now try to move itself to the front.
Bugs introduced in v3.6.21.2
Mission/Training WAgame files crashed upon playback
Early prerelease replays (from private betas before 2004-01-27) desynced if crates were involved.
If W:A were forced to minimise in-game (without using the ESC menu option) then its palette would be garbled and no amount of minimising would bring it back.
The game would sometimes crash when returning to the front end.
Fixed affecting game logic
The Girder Starter-Pack allows you to select a stop sign after placing at least one girder, to prematurely stop placing them. However, in v3.5 Beta 1, this was inadvertently disabled. It works again now.

Features
The <center> tag is now supported and used in ServerList.htm.
The Extract Log feature now lists total turn/retreat times for each team.
The colour scheme used for allies (red, blue, green, yellow, purple, cyan) can now be modified to allow those with certain types of colour deficiency to be able to easily distinguish problematic colour pairs. This switch has been added to the Options Menu, replacing the terrain editing button in that screen. If the new colour set does not help you and you still have trouble distinguishing certain ally colours, please post here.
Changes affecting game logic
You now get retreat time after using the Girder Starter-Pack on land.
The Mortar and Homing Missile now have shiny new launchers that are coloured differently, to make them easily distinguishable from the Bazooka and Homing Pigeon. The Bazooka also has a makeover.

Notes
Due to its larger size, this release is distributed as a self-extracting executable. With 7zip it can acheive a higher compression ratio than that of which the ZIP format is capable.
Due to the changes regarding colours, a pair of new sprite archives have been included in this release. These files are approximately 12 MB each, and are not internally compressed because this allows the distributed package to compress much better (for a quicker download).
If you are not going to use the colour deficiency option, you may safely delete Gfx1.dir, freeing 12 MB of hard disk space. Similarly, if you are only going to use it, you may delete Gfx0.dir. Deleting them both will still allow W:A to run, but will disable the new colour features.
The original Gfx.dir is still used for compatibility purposes. Do not delete it.
Due to the larger sprite archive, W:A now requires 8 MB more RAM than before. If this is a problem for you, please post in the support forum (see section 5.0).
As an upshot, W:A may run be slightly faster in-game since it will not need to decompress sprites on the fly.

Not that it'll matter for me for the next ten weeks, but would it be (or is it already, without me knowing) possible to seperate the in-game ambient music from the sound effects when adjusting volumes?

I sometimes like to play my own music, but if i reduce the worms volume with my speakers I can't hear the timer tick down :) And if I don't, i can hear the worms music overlap.

Early prerelease replays (from private betas before 2004-01-27) desynced if crates were involved.

Aaah, crates were the cause. That'll explain why some of my really old replays from the private days worked fine, I was wondering, but I didn't ask you when we talked about it because I'm stupid I forgot.

just a quick question (i think it doesnt need a new thread)... will there be new future servers?
i was wondering if worms armageddon would have a server/client future (as in most fps, where people can setup their own servers, which actually are quite good for leagues as such things).
actually (just a thought), people could connect the a main server, get the ranking :P and then connect to a new server or something like that, so no matter what server you connect to, you still get your ranking...

would this be a good idea? :s

MadEwokHerd
7 Oct 2004, 03:02
The server really doesn't have to know anything about worms, and it wouldn't make sense to combine client and server into one program. I have no reason to believe this will change in the future. As for the likelyhood of unofficial servers being supported, I cannot deny nor speculate remember if I heard anything..

YAY @ mortar / homing missle sprite.

looking forward to see them when i get home.

Problem; dont you think it'd get rather complicated with all these extra downloads for the patch? Because there are already planty of people that need help finding the right patch and knowing what to do when. Maybe there could be something done about that. Like make a prog which will update automaticly, or give that option when you connect to wnet or something like that. If people have to download 4 files to update, that's rather confusing.

I've noticed that the unpatched straight-from-the-CD installation of W:A works on my XP box right up until the moment you start a game. The updated version would work right up until the moment the pie counter thing got to 100%, which I suppose was better. The last few updates (I think from 3.6.21.x onward) don't quite get to the title screen before they crash.

I don't know why. When I run WA.EXE now I get a blank grey window with a inset border which I assume is supposed to be the splash screen a couple of hundred pixels in from the top left corner of the screen, and it stays there, never updating, never clearing the contents of other windows from that area of the screen. Eventually I have to kill the WA process to get shot of it.

The beta patches are official released, done by Deadcode. He's not Team17 staff (He lives in a different country for a start), but he's a "Team17 Helper". Team17 gave him the WA source code, for example. They are completely official.

I've added ColourDeficiency DWORD 1 in regedit, and now it works.

But now it doesn't seem to remember when i want to change back to old colours. I'm getting the exact opposite problem as before. Hope that would help.

All you've changed is the default setting... by setting it to "1" you've changed the colours as default but it wont change the fact that it doesnt save the users preference...

however, assuming you use one more than the other, it is a temporary solution

Yeah. You have to patch from v1.0 to v3.0, and then you can go straight to the newest beta. You don't need 3.0.5.0 Beta 2, but you do need 3.0.

At some point it'll allow you to check boxes to choose what you want to include, because with everything it would become a very crowded log.

i can say for a fact that making the mortar shot red is not easily done - changing the blue color to red makes the gold band and tail a holible color that cannot be easily fixed - mostly because the original high-res sprites are not available to be changed - if they were the sprites could be edited and all would be fine.
The mortar shots are being looked at though - and if your lucky a solution will be found. just keep hoping if it bothers you that much... man im drunk - cyao

The MSN Messenger alerts have never crashed my WA, but while an alert is up, it pays to not click in the general area of the bottom right hand corner of the screen, otherwise you click on the alert, an msn window opens, and the game minimises.

Having said that it still isn't a 'crash', but damn annoying when it happens. Of course, one hardly ever left-clicks in a WA game anyway, let alone in that corner...

It is possible. My old Juno net software had an always on top banner, and it forced itself even over the W:A game. So durring the game, I could move the mouse pointer back and forth over the banner (which ended up centering itself on the screen for some reason).

the question is, why does it exit?
most games just slow down a bit, and some even show the little alert..

anyway, I got used to set myself not available on messenger while I play. that way no window pops up..

oh, and about the game crashing: I was playing online, suddenly the game crashed to my desktop, and a msn messenger alert pops up from the corner of my screen (same game resolution as my desktop, if it is any good to know). Thats why i think msn messenger alerts crash worms armageddon. I don't know if it has happened to you before...

edit: it seems that msn wasnt the cause of the crash.. here's another crash. It seems to explode just before the worm explodes... weird... looks like the old skunk crash.

So, are we(well, maybe you can replace "are" by "is" and "w" by "m", but i dont think i'm that alone) now missing the fun with modding sprites? The new format doesnt seem editable by the old sprite editor tool. That's because the author of that sprite editor was lazy and didn't bother to handle uncompressed SPR files. He had the information needed to do so, but didn't see the need. Uncompressed IMG files are apparently handled.

i actually have a suggestion (not ranks or logins *gasp*)

in a channel, it would be handy if there was a notice when someone made a gameroom

right now, it only displays whether anyone leaves or joins a channel

i've really wanted this since, oh, 2000?

Unfortunately, the client isn't told when this happens. Instead, it asks the server to send the list every 30 seconds or whenever someone leaves the channel (which causes lag).

so there isnt actually any way to do this? I mean, you could send a "/me has started room $roomname$" message when you create a room... (just before you leave the channel, pressing the accept button after pressing the host button).

Also, there could be a window next to the chat one, where you could see information about a game when selected (players, map name, scheme name, teams names, etc).

Ok, maybe im asking too much (as the server is apparently a modified irc server or something like that)

I have no idea why they aren't using a system where the server only tells you about the games that are added/removed when they are added/removed.

Actually, yes, maybe I do. The server in charge of managing games and the server in charge of chatting..well..they don't talk much.. And the game server is http. So the irc server has no way of telling the client these things.

It would probably have been too difficult to modify an irc server to do both of these things (though it might have been possible to create a bot in charge of managing these things).

Dunno why they don't use proper actions either..

Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but didn't the client already send messages like that that were filtered for some reason?

I see. So, is there gonna be a new sprite editor or something or we just have to forget about sprite modding? I don't mark it as a thing that should be solved with high priority, i just want to know.

(also i want to ask for gfx.dir selection(to easily change your gfx.dir without renaming or using sprite editor)(also maybe a frontend selector?), the gfx with the sprites for colorblinded people can go in the selection list...)

That's more a question for whoever wrote the sprite editor than Deadcode. Unless he wrote it, and is cunning referring to himself as "the author of the sprite editor" to avoid beingcalled lazy. But I doubt that.

Could you finally make a patch for country not represented by a flag so I could finally play without changing country in Control Panel setting. I know that 98% of you are not affected by this but that still doesn`t mean that you should always leave that for some other beta release. It is really a big problem for me and I think that that wouldn`t be a much of a problem for you to fix it. By the way I`m from Serbia and Montenegro (Eastern Europe).

The problem is not that the correct flag doesn't show. The problem is that he can't play WA if his Windows regional settings are set to Serbia and Montenegro. He has to change his regional settings to some region that WA does accept in order to play the game.

yeah, I cant play if i set my regional setting to Chile. So I have to set it up to spain to make the game work. This problem will be fixed soon as far as I know. The problem is that the game just wont run if the country set up in regional settings isnt on the list of known countries of the game.

If you look in the beta readme, ikn one version DC added a limit for the power levels that an external scheme editor could set - It was 20 for most weapons, and lower for a few others (the Axe, for one)

Yeah. You have to patch from v1.0 to v3.0, and then you can go straight to the newest beta. You don't need 3.0.5.0 Beta 2, but you do need 3.0.

Sorry guys, if I didn't took the time to search more about these issues:

What exactly is going on with the "roof"-feature?
I have several maps that need the "roof" (like as in T17-cave maps),
but can't find a way to have it appear?
Didn't the "wall"-button in the editor used to rotate between: no walls, roof, all sides wall ?

How about a "kick-player-out-of-game-during-game"-feature? has that been introduced?

I heard something about Folders for the maps:
- is that introduced?
- how do I set those up? (simply in windows explorer? any folder-name restrictions?)

love the color-map feature and the "crawling backwards" shift-feature!!!
(However I guess I need to redo all my maps now!!! *sigh*)

thx for letting me know!

FoxyLady

...been a while, eh? :-)

To get a roof, either right-click the border option to put a roof on the map, or update your maps so that the top 8 rows of pixels are all filled in. It used to be that you only needed at least 1 pixel on either of the top 2 rows, but this restricted you from having certain maps without a roof.

There's no kick during the game feature.

You can just create your map sub-folders in Windows Explorer, and there's no name restrictions that I know of.

don't know if it actually was "promised"...
and besides, i could promise you a lot of things too, if you get them is another question

you're from austria, thus, it's highly probable that you have that one release of the german version of worms armageddon, which had some maps mixed up!
wasi made has a solution plus a patch which should solve the problem!

You mentioned the following issue in another topic:

"After minimising in-game, it is sometimes impossible to restore. This is pretty rare, but nevertheless does happen."

I'd like to report you this bug happens way more often. Actually, I'd say that at 10% of the times in which I minimise W:A and begin playing around with Miranda-IM (and Instant Messenger utility), focusing, closing and switching windows, W:A crashes when I attempt to restore it.

I could really use a fix for that, since many times I refuse to answer my mates, afraid of crashing Worms in the middle of a game!

Does any1 have an idea? This is a bug in the German W:A CD-ROM. It is missing eight mission images. Fortunately, all of these are duplicated in the Image directory on the CD-ROM.

I have implemented a workaround for this bug, which will be in v3.6.23.0 when I release it.

How on Earth does stuff like that slip through tes—

It doesn't, does it? There is no testing, is there? It's possible that the German WA.EXE was designed to do something similar to what my workaround does, i.e. for the missions whose image files are absent, instead use the corresponding images which are identical. Perhaps they needed to save some space on the CD. Without having a copy of the German WA.EXE I don't know.

There is a well-known fix for this - don't minimise !

Seriously though, any programs which have an 'always on top' option, such as AIM/ICQ/MSN/WINAMP etc play havoc with W:A as it was also designed to be 'always on top'

The minimise feature was implemented later, hence the unstability of it all. I have a P4 3.2 with 1G of RAM & a Radeon 9800 Pro - mine still does it, admittedly much less since doubling the amount of RAM....
