I was wondering how many of you "T17 fanboys" plan to use the webkit, whether it be for your own website, or the competition....

Of course I'm going to use it...
I'm going to enter the contest and I'm using the stuff for MY PAGE (http://wormcentral.vze.com)

ps -- the full webkit is downloading way too slow - it's @ 6k/sec

edit:
It is lame how ONLY European and Australian residents can enter for the WebKit Contest!!

(Too worried that Americans will win, eh? heh heh.)

...until i also read that bit about the contest only being open to Europe/Australia residents. i was pretty excited about it too.

Team17: are you (or sega...or atari) planning on having a similar contest for other countries? i'm a web designer and would love a crack at this contest (or a similar one).

on another note, would it be considered 'cheating' if i was to build a site, then 'give' it to a friend who lives in europe/australia, and have them enter? if that's fine - are there any forum members out there (living in europe/australia) who'd be interested in doing this?

I'm guessing that would be cheating, because then THAT person would have to do another website, if T17 picked that design.

In the second design competition ("round 2"), everyone makes another website, and then ONE OF THOSE gets picked to be the "Official Fansite for Worms 3D". Then they probably are responsible for updating all the content. Would you want "your friend" to have all of the responsibilities/glory of having an Official Fansite, if you did all of the work for it??

i wouldn't mind at all if they took it over. i'm just interested in the design, and the contest (though i am a huge fan of worms, patiently awaiting my order on the 31st). i would of course plan to (if the person gets chosen) also work on the 2nd round of the contest.

I think I'm a good web designer... and thats my chance for all my work to have a reward!!... but in any case... I may be the last person to be accepted for the competition.. cuz I'm from Southamerica.. from Chile!!... and we're never considered for nothing.. :'(.. snif!.... but someday!!! you'll see!!....

This time you are "the rest of the world" just like everyone else is to america.

Huh?

What are you talking about?

Is that your stereotype of America?

I just thought that the person with the best web skills should win, but I guess they wanted biased results.

But now, they will have to sort thru n00b pages. So you're saying the best person with the best web skills is from the usa. Why do you think that?

You know most people on this forum are from Europe and Australia so I think you'll find there will be less noob pages than you think. Most people won't submit them if they know it's crap. People in Europe and Austrailia can make web pages you know. Like me, S2K, Test Zero, Paul.Power, WormMad, SupSuper, SargeMcCluck and the list goes on and on...

this is why i stayed away from mentioning any specific countries in my posts. my only question is: will there be a similar contest for other countries? i believe the europe/australia restriction has to do with sega europe sponsoring the contest. i know there can't be 2 official fansites - just wondering if plans are in the works for another website competition elsewhere.

So you're saying the best person with the best web skills is from the usa.No.

What if the guy from Chile (above) made a better page than you guys....?

That's all I'm saying.

People in Europe and Austrailia can make web pages you know. ... and the list goes on and on... I know that people are capable.

But let others do it, too! I want to see pages from all across the world, to see how different people see things in different countries.

Would it be allowed to work on the page as a Team (e.g. two people on one page)?

I'm not planning to enter as of now, but I got no real idea how good the graphical part will work out, I'm not doing it =D My part is the coding.

And it's meant to be clanpage mainly, so I got no idea if It'd fit the idea of an official fansite.

Something totally diferent: Is it allowed to advertise ones Clan/Clanpage here? Like make a thread concerning the Clan, give information about it and a link to the Clanpage?

And well, some parts of the Webkit don't seem to be too useful, The Press part doesn't seem to have any use for a webpage.

I'm sure there are plenty of legal reasons why Americans can't enter. Just like most contest in America are only available to USers for similar legal reasons.

It's not personal. It's legal. GET OVER IT.

Meanwhile, as long as we're talking about web pages, I don't suppose anyone could be bothered to make a USABLE version of the Webkit """"microsite?"""" One where you can read and scroll through text at your own pace and not have to chance catching lame flash animated marquees without scrollbars at just the right time?

For something encouraging good webpages, that page is awfully, well... ...awful.

I've been trying to download the webkit ever since the email notice came out (this morning for me), and it keeps dropping/cutting me off. The transfer rate is between 10kb and 8kb /sec.

Must be a popular download today.

In my personal opinion (cause I'm a major web designer) this is the best thing that Team17 has done since announcing Worms3D.

I'm entering if I have the time to create a really good site. Of course, this means that work on WorMatriX will slow down, but I'll try to juggle both at the same time.

Who else is entering? And are they going to use Flash? (cause I know thePhallex is).

thePhalanx: You're Page looks pretty nice, basic but well done flash layout, graphics wise, it's nothing special, but it's still okay.

Two major flaws: 1) Popups. I wouldn't mind one or two Popups when opening the page, but one after every click? This is far too annoying to look over and made me quit the Page before I even checked half of it.

2) That button in the bottomleft corner.

I don't know if Team17 will care about stuff like that, but if it is somehow possible you might want to find some Host without popups and banners.

Noone has answered my questions yet =/

Thanks for the comments!
:)

Let me clarify:

This is my own personal test page.

It is hosted by one of the many free hosting companies.

(If you don't close that ONE popup window, it will keep only that ONE window for popping-up. It won't keep opening new popups.)

(If I try to enter the contest) I would make my site ENTIRELY in Flash, and it wouldn't be on a free hosting site, so there would be NO BANNERS/Pop-Ups. I don't know if it will be worth it though, since I live in the US.

I'm currently working on a First-Person-view Worms Shooter, made in Flash, for my website.
I don't know how I'll use it, but it will be cool.

Sheesh, dude, just make your site and post it here already! Web sites (and the good ideas behind them) do not exist to win contests. Heck, did you even KNOW about this contest when you came up with the idea? And now you're so incensed about a LEGAL RULE that T17 more than likely has NO CONTROL OVER that you're spouting about not making it? That would be fairly pathetic, IMHO.

The only reason I was going to create one was the competition incentive. Honestly, there's nothing I can put into a Worms 3D fansite (except perhaps an original design) that you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere.

Yes, I can still create one... but I'd rather spend my time doing more productive things.

Got to give people a chance to get some of the assets in their existing site to improve it, or create new ones...

Any hints from Team17 what they're looking for? Personally, I'll be looking for most interesting, perhaps different uses of the assets.

Looking for good crisp, clean styles that show a faithfullness to the other official sites but being different - no copying! Cross-browser compatibility and new content - not just more of the same or copies of what we have written!

But Im not the only judge, and all our ideas will differ!

Are the websites evaluated when they are submitted or are they evaluated on the 14th November. I would submit my site now but:

1) For the above reason (mine isn't online yet!)
2) I don't want people to go to my website and steal my ideas.

Also the competition is for 13 and over for legal reasons and stuff. APJ or Spadge could tell you more about it I suppose. Notice when you joined the forum it asks if you are 13 or over or younger and you have to click a different link depending upon your age. This is because of the same reason.

Why do you think you won't stand a chance if he enters? As long as your site looks nice, doesn't have to be perfect, and has lots of info, you're in the game. I don't think Team 17 will award some goodlooking, empty site an 'official' status...

Nice. I like the layout.

The only things I would change are:

1) Change the Frame borders to be 0, with no scroll.
When you resize the page, you can see scroll bars, and that makes it look wierd.

2) Think about the colors used in the Gradient Fill coloring...
It doesn't need to be everywhere, and when you DO use it, you want it to be subtle, like shading, or it will be too obvious, and distract from the content.

3) Resize the W3D logos that are in each corner, so they are the EXACT size you want them to be in the Flash movie....
Flash compresses images slightly, and when you resize them for the movie, it makes them even more distorted.

Other than that, it looks pretty good.
:D

Another Suggestion is that you might want to think about using a little less flash. I dont know if team 17 even considers this , but the page takes a long time to load with a dial up connection. Sometimes this can really irritate people.

I'll make the entire site using HTML with a PHP update/admin engine (Using forms editing/adding context to the site). Not sure about the PHP just yet though, maybe I should send in a pure HTML demo site? What do ya think? Considering that Team 17 might diss my PHP solution, they just might have something quite different in store for us later on...

I'd advise you to use php includes at least, whether it just be for the navbar, otherwise updating a site becomes an incredibly tedious affair, having to update 20 pages when you want to update just one bit of the navbar.

You could always use SSI I suppose, but why when there's php? And frames are ugly.

Whether you chose to use a php post/get form to update your news or not, I still recommend the usage of includes.

Slightly more bandwidth used, but still as equally little space, and gives you more flexibility.

I'm not trying to tell you guys your job or anything but have you tried ASP Flash Turbine? It's very similar to Macromedia's Generator in that it generates dynamic flash content via ASP ADO or PHP objects but its much faster, smaller and cheaper. I've used it on large, database driven sites (Tomy Toys' page for one) and it worked a treat.

Just a suggestion! :)

well...i began working on this site when the contest started i guess out of hope that it would open up to include other countries, but it doesn't seem like that will happen. i can't enter since i don't live in europe or australia, but i secured a pretty good domain name and built what i believe to be a pretty decent site with a nice backend.

since i do not have time to run a worms fan site, i'd be willing to 'give' the site to any worms fan out there who would want to run it. its built solidly ... nice clean code, cross-browser compatible, efficient layout, easy to update, small file sizes to the nearest k across the board.

its a shame that it simply has no chance of becoming the official worms3d fansite, simply because the author doesn't live in a certain location...it is in fact intended for the 'world-wide-web' ...

team17: is there any way for people outside europe/australia to participate? if not...does anyone out there want to take over this site?

btw, do u have some sections in another language intentionally or is it just there to fill in space??

yeah that is random nonsense-latin, just there to take up space. it will all be filled in with appropriate text.

once i hear a response from team17 i'll arrange transferring the site over to someone, we'll see if anyone else wants it and how it will work out best transferring. maybe a few people can run it together (the backend supports multiple users).

I like the look of boggyb.com shadi, you seem pretty confident to deem it the offical Worms 3D fansite before judging!

Although I'm not quite adding in content into my site, I'm debating on how much content to put into the site for round 1, because I want to save some stuff for round 2 but I need to have enough in there to be in the top ten sites! (Yeah, I'm semi-confident as well!)

ha. i don't know about confidence as much as i just figured i'd put all the content up as if it was the official site, since that's how it would look if it was picked - which it can't be - so that'll have to change ;)

thanks! i believe i had a shot at one of the prizes (if not the comp, one of the video cards) ... but i agree with the phallex. its not open to everyone, and if i did enter 'through' someone else, we'd have to deal with what happens if they get the prize, will they want to keep it (or parts from it), how much to ship again, etc. that coupled with the fact that i haven't heard anything about outside entries made me kinda just decide to not try and enter the competition anymore.

still awaiting some official word on this...but i think T17's pretty busy with the recent release of worms3d.

on a side note...i got my copy yesterday, which i pre-ordered from their site - and that was pretty darn quick considering i live overseas. thanks t17! (so far, its awesome btw).

i just want to make sure i am doing this correct. When i make a site does it have to be active or can i just make one for the purpose of this comp. everyone i have seen has news and stuff on but i don't have the time to do all that.

and can i use Flash with my design or does it have to be HTML.

Guy from I , i agree with you that a lot of the sites, seem to use things from team 17's website rather than the webkit. However, if the content you are referring to is "information" content ie. Textual cotent. Then i believe it is quite difficult to come up with different information about worms 3D... ie weapons info news and such things. The sites design should be unique yes, and it should display some creativity. But we cannot create information about worms 3D that isnt there. I think you are just referring to image content and other such things, so in that case you are right. But just in case i thought id say that ;)

I understand it's hard to come up with new 'information' about Worms 3D, but it's sad to see people just use Team17's description of the game and features list, but it's their choice, and hey, it might help me win in the end!

As far as images are concerned, that's also hard to work with. In addition I'm annoyed at the lack of downloads that we can have (i.e. no speechbanks, maps, etc or so I've heard). If I make it to Round 2 then I think people will be pleasantly surprised with what I can offer...

BTW, did anyone using the webkit notice that the worm/Weapons_Wide_A4_300dpi.psd image uses the old Worms 3D logo? Just shows how long Team17 have been planning the webkit!

Phallex, ur site is very nicely put together and very clever. Ill be interested in giving you a further opinion when all the content is added.

Just a couple of small things...

I have a 256 K ADSL connection and the page took about 30 seconds to load, now this isnt such a problem because its a games site and you have an interesting loading screen, but im sure as a web designer you know that pages generally need to load within 7 seconds on a dial up connection. I fear that on a dial up connection the site could take anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes just to load.

However since the layout is so rich, detailed and clever i think that this may be forgiven, and i dont see many ways in which you could make the page load any faster.

Also although the mourse cursor is extremely cool, it moves quite slowly. if theres any way to speed it up that would be good, it just seems to drag a little bit.

Perhaps you could consider making a html version of the site also for dial up users, or even combine the 2 and use the menu screen u are using now as some sort of splash screen.

I cant think of much else right now, and please dont take offense to any of my suggestions, i am an amateur web designer and know from your posts that you make web pages for a living so im probably not telling you anything new, but u asked for some feedback.

All in all an excellent looking site, i look forward to seeing the finished product, and to the day when i can be as good at web design as you!!! :D

Yes, it's actually quite hard to find the proper "medium" -- using the right methods to add in different pictures, etc... -- to get the file size down.

Right now, it's sitting at around 1mb, which is RATHER larger for a .SWF, but it will load the other "sections" as separate .SWF movies, so the initial size shouldn't grow too much more.

I was just trying to get the "feel" of the W3D front-end.

I hope I achieved this.

So far the best site i've seen here is Triqui's site.

After mine of course... cus i'm going to win first prize. :D

I just have a question... should we add things like forums/etc.... i can add lots of things and even buy a top-level domain, but it'd irritate me if after all the hard work i don't win anything. :P

Just need to ask a quick question. On the microsite when I submit my site it says processing form...

I've left it for like 30minutes but nothing else is happening. It still displays the writting processing form...

Does that mean my site is submitted?

About the forum... I think this forum will remain the only official one.

It's not easy to publish content because the game is so fresh... how can I publish (example) a strategy guide if I still don't have a strategy?

I think Team17 will consider we cannot add much content at the moment.

Fan sites usually have their own forum i think.

PS: Two guys are using templates made by someone else. And i think they're even copyrighted by their real owners.

and
http://www.worms3d.rocks.it/

What they(or he) could have at least is try and make it a bit different or something. these sites are like 95-100% like the original.

I was lurking at the submitted sites, and I did not see any italian flag next to the url submitted...

so to make the competition a bit more world-wide I am thinking to join it.

This is a layout I am working on, made it in about 2 hours, the title will be changed from "official" to "triqui's" when the compo will be over.

Also, I am thinking about a domain name, but I still don't know if team17 will host the sites on their servers or not.

I will add some content in a couple of days, time to rewrite some php-mysql code to fit the things I am thinking about.

well, that's all at the moment, hope I made a competitive job.

here it is (http://www.720webdesign.com/worms/)

Nice design!

Just one thing though, don't blame me for copying your design if I win, one of my designs look quite similar. :p

With a DSL I loaded it in less than 10 secs, but I think it will be a bit slow on aanalog modems.

Maybe you should plan a "light" and a "heavy" version of the site?

Well, the first thing is, most of us here in the US all have DSL anyways, and second, anyone that still has dial-up needs to do something about it. (I personally plan where I'm going to live if I can get DSL there)

Also, it's tough to use all those transparent .PNGs as icons and assets of the site, and then try to keep the file size down, while still keeping it cool -- that's pretty hard.

So I don't think that it'll be possible for dial-up users to get a "lite" version, since it only takes around 1min to load 1mb on dial-up anyway.

But I'll see what I can do.

Try re-producing the .PNGs yourself in flash, thats what we did for the microsite.

You should be able to get it down to a decent size.

The whole of the webkit microsite is only 340kb

Yeah.... i'm 100% sure.... i've seen these before.

I will post the templates as soon as i find em again. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, Sel. :D

But I already tried that (import "icon ring.png" -> "trace bitmap", add more traced-bitmaps for icons on different layers, etc...) and all that did was make the file BIGGER.

How did you guys get the icons so small in size, without it "warping" with motion-tweens/actionscript?

What happens when you submit a link? I submitted and it said "processing form..." and never got any further. Is it supposed to give back any more confirmation or is that it?

I'm asuming something buggered up, either that or the microsite hasn't been updated since yesterday afternoon.

I've tried submitting my website on 3 different computers now and still I keep getting "processing form...". I hav left each computer on for like half an hour. But still nothing changes.

Does anyone know if that means my website has been submitted?

I'm on a modem myself and I don't find 1Mb takes all that long, but I would personally suggest a preloader be added at the least if you haven't already, don't think you need people leaving your site because they think it isn't opening or something, and at the very least it's better than staring at a white canvas while it loads. :)

also, my own site is added now if anyone wants to look ;) . Still needs work of course here and there.

Just tried again and it went through OK. It shows another screen after the "processing form.." is displayed. Guess you will have to keep trying too.

Well, I DO have a pre-loader, but I don't know how well it works, since it always starts right up for me.

Try it out (http://www.rightsys.com/temp/test.htm) and see if it works ok.

Very nice... but might I suggest increasing the center of mass offset (or whatever - that's how I'd've done it) on the mouse cursor - I think it spins a little too fast.

I've struggled with making it exactly like the frontend, but I think that's the closest I can get it, with the things that I already know.

If I find a good script that rotates it correctly, it won't do that.
If I move the "center of mass," it will not seem like the cursor is actually on the object you're trying to click on, but farther away. This is because the script has to tri-angulate where the user's (hidden) mouse is, how far away the cursor is from that, and then adjust distance and rotation accordingly, stopping the "center of mass" on where the user's mouse is. *Very tough*.

You'll notice you can't get the cursor to move backwards, like you can in the game.

**I'd be grateful if the person who coded the W3D front-end could give some pointers, but I doubt that will ever happen.**

I think I see. The game seems to let the center of mass (which is in the middle of the arrow rather than at the end) rest a set distance from the actual mouse position, and it seems to move the COM as little as possible each frame; much like it would if you pushed a real arrow around a low friction surface.

It's quite celver stuff, especially for a mouse pointer.

Indeed. And quite the puzzle to crack. :-/

W3D is definately the first occurance that I've seen a mouse pointer rotate like it does. A very good effect, I think ALL mouse cursors should do that now.

I think you'd probably need to calculate the dot product of the velocity vector of the mouse and the tail end of the cursor in relation to the tip, then apply motion to the tail along the line of the direction of mouse movement multiplied by the normalised dot product.

It would make quite an interesting little coding titbit!

Well, I don't know what that was all about. I program it with ActionScript.

I currently have it like this:
a = cursor._y - _ymouse;
b = cursor._x - _xmouse;
angleA = Math.atan2(a, b);
degrees = Math.ceil(angleA/(Math.pi/180));
TargetDegrees = degrees;
TargetDiff = Math.ceil(TargetDegrees - CurrDegrees);
TargetAngle = Math.ceil(CurrDegrees + (TargetDiff));
setProperty ("cursor", _rotation, TargetAngle);

And that's just for the rotation!
it also has a little bit of "ease" to following your mouse -- it doesn't stay EXACTLY on your pointer, like the Windows one does -- it's more like you're dragging this one around.

http://pixelmethods.com/wormnet/index.php there's my url sjBu tell me how long it loads cached too.

In mozilla your loading bar doesnt display correctly. For some reason, your site wont cache in my browsers, or the site just has a lot of images to load, because when i load it in IE 6 the bar works bar takes about 30 seconds to finish loading images. Also the icons at the top of your main page dont highlight in mozilla. You should consider making the site a little more cross browser compatible, if you want it to be the official site...

Once the images are loaded the page is fast and everything else seems fine. Takes a little longer to load in mozilla though. If you dont care about cross browser compatibility stuff then it all seems fine. Hope that helps :D

EDIT: Also in IE when u right over ur sidebar on left hand side , that changes the text at the top of the screen. However when you run over the icons that doesnt highlight it so the user has no idea where the icon links take you. Might wanna fix that too.

After you have imported the PNG and it is on the stage turn the alpha down to about 40%.

Get your line tool/circle tool and draw over it as if you are tracing the PNG (dont use trace bitmap). Once you are happy with the shape fill it in using a linear gradient.

I know this explanation is a bit vague...but thats how it was done for the microsite. We found it was the easiest and most effective way. It just takes a bit of time.

Hope this helps.
