/------------------------------------------------------------------\ |AK's tutorial on how to use the W:A Sprite Editor made by FudgeBoy| \------------------------------------------------------------------/ You only need to do steps 1-4 once unless you update your W:A game. Then you need to rename or delete the new Gfx0 and Gfx1 files. Instructions -------------- 1. Go to the W:A main directory (probably C:\Program Files\Team17\W:A (or whatever)). 2. From there, go to Data\Gfx. 3. Make a copy of the Gfx.dir and rename the Gfx0.dir and the Gfx1.dir files. 4. Go to the properties of the Gfx.dir and make turn Read-Only off. 5. Open the sprite editor. 6. Load the Gfx.dir file. 7. Select the sprite(s) you wish to edit and click "Extract and Convert" (remember to check for the u and d versions (up and down)). 8. Type in the directory you wish to extract them to, and add a \1 to the end of it. 9. Go to the files and rename them so you remove the 1 in front of their names. 10. Edit the .spr.bmp with any program of your choice. However, you must only use a program that supports custom palettes. Use the palette that should come with the sprite editor. You may use any colour in that palette. You will notice that there are at least 2 blacks in this palette. This is because the colour with a palette index of 0 (which is the first black) is used for transparancy. To remove confusion, i suggest you change that black to a different colour in that palette that will not be used in the sprite. 11. Save your edited sprites. 12. Open the Sprite editor and load the Gfx.dir file. 13. Click "Convert and add" 14. Select the [sprite name].spr.spd file. An error message should appear. Repeat this and it should work. 15. Save the Gfx.dir file and test your edited sprites in the game. Some small notes ------------------ The reason you renamed the Gfx0.dir and the Gfx1.dir files is because in the newer patches, there are some new sprites used for the mortar and possibly some others. However, because of the way they were compressed, means that the .dir files cannot be opened witht the sprite editor. The game will work without those files and will load the sprites from the Gfx.dir instead. An error in the Sprite editor means that it will insert the last part of the destination path when extracting files, to the file names and not create the folder (hence the "/1" at the end and the removing of the "1" from the names) W:A runs on a 256 colour palette. About 80 of these colours are used for the sprites. The palette file that comes with the sprite editor contains these colours. Stick to that palette. The first colour (index of 0) is used for transparancy. This allows for the black colour to be used in the sprites. Tutorial by Alien King email: alienk@btopenworld.com
